The departure is from Naples to the Amalfi Coast until Vietri, final destination, for a total distance of about 90 km.

Amalfi Coast Itinerary (Map)

Possibility would be ideal for those who travel in vintage car or on an ancient vespa because the coastline is one of those places out of time where you have the feeling of living the sweet life of Fellini and where there is nothing that you remember that the time has passed. To make it even more suggestive better to start in the late afternoon so as not to miss the moment of sunset at the seaside that absolutely deserves to be lived. You take the highway Napoli-Salerno direction Salerno and after about thirty kilometers you take the exit Castellammare di Stabia, where it is clearly indicated Amalfi coast direction. Uneseful to talk abouu all the traffic jam at the weekend during the day for cars that block the traffic for parking in Castellammare area, and in the evening for the return. Fortunately there are other ways to reach the coast:

  • The Circumvesuviana train from Naples Central Station in about 1 hour leads to Sorrento and from there, just outside the station, take the Sita bus that comes to Amalfi and stop in all the main villages of the coast.

  • Metró del mare operating from late April to late September from Naples to Positano every day with the lines of Gescab from Beverello harbour at 08:35, 10:35, 14:00, 14:40, 16:00. The cost of the ordinary one-way ticket is 29 euro. For children from 2 to 12 years is 19.70 euros.

From the highway exit at Castellammare, after the two large galleries, in Vico Equense you will reach the famous and historic Scraio beach that on warm summer evenings become even discoteca. Not to miss Oasis stop to taste the famous and delicious saltimbocca (bread pizza, melted cheese and ham). Equally famous in the area Gragnano Panuozzo with pizza dough, baked strictly wood and stuffed with mozzarella and bacon in its classic version but includes many variations ranging from ham and mozzarella, sausage and broccoli or broccoli, the devilled / angry with mozzarella, sausage, mushrooms, tomato and spicy. The matching wine can only be the DOC Gragnano Sorrento Coast, with a ruby red color, a vinous aroma and pleasant, sparkling and when young even foamy like a lambrusco but with more body, aroma, pleasant aftertaste of smoked and drink at a temperature around 10 degrees as for young whites. Today the vines of Gragnano are especially Aglianico, Piedirosso and Olivella Also Known As Sciascinoso. Very good Grotta del Sole version.

In Vico Equense is absolutely worth to stop just for the pleasure of a Illy coffee, an aperitif or a Mediterranean dinner at the beautiful restaurant Sushi Bar Signum, accurate wine list, champagne bar, superior design down to the details. In the same Vico do not miss the famous meter pizza Da Gigino proposed in many variations and a real local institution. Other few kilometers to reach Sorrento and Sorrento peninsula. The morphological change is clear and strong, the landscape changes completely and it seems almost incredible that a few dozen kilometers from the chaotic and noisy urban centers can exist a paradise like this.

Continuing we pass the church of Meta di Sorrento and then arrive at a crossroads. At this point we have to choose whether to visit before Sorrento or go directly to the coast. I suggest you spend a couple of hours to visit and get lost among the picturesque alleys filled with small craft shops and numerous laboratories for the production of the famous limoncello, liqueur typical of these areas. For dinner I recommend the steak house and wine bar refined grilleria Meating in Pieta street 20, a few meters from the famous disco Filou Club Sorrento near Piazza Tasso. In Marina Grande, the family trattoria Da Emilia that does not take reservations and offers typical dishes such as mussels with lemon, Sorrento braids, eggplant parmigiana, gnocchi alla sorrentina with tomato and melted mozzarella, spaghetti with clams, fried fish to close with the lemon delight and an honest bill of no more than 30 euro.

Few kilometers from Sorrento an address to keep in mind. In Sant'Agata dei due Golfi Stuzzichino in Desert street, 1 (081.5330010) with remarkable wine list and I highly recommend to accompany fish meals with the awarded Fiano di Avellino Ciro Picariello or Greco di Tufo Tornante di Vadiaperti and taste scialiatielli with seafood, fried fish, sea bream and yellowtail acqua pazza or baked squid and potatoes, provolone del monaco to close with an honest bill of no more than 40 euro wine included.
After Sorrento begins the stunning Amalfi coast and after about 10 km of cross and breathtaking cliffs overlooking the sea we reach the amazing Positano.
